Imagine an All State athletic team, but for high school journalists. That's the concept behind the Oregon All State Journalism Team that recognizes the top high school journalists across the state. Students with at least one year of publication staff experience submitted resumes of their journalistic accomplishments, with an emphasis on the skills and guidelines of JEA's national high school journalist of the year contest. Students who submitted applications with their resume and portfolio to the Oregon State Journalist of the Year contest were automatically considered for the Oregon All State Journalism Team.
Much like the OSAA All-State Honor process where coaches vote on honors, Advisers with All State Journalism Team applicants looked over a random sampling of 11-12 resumes, assigning points to the most outstanding resumes not from their school. Each applicant was scored by three different advisers and the resumes receiving the most outstanding votes were named to the All-State Journalism Team. Additional students also receiving outstanding votes were named to the 2nd Team All-State and there were still students receiving votes necessitating a list of Honorable Mentions.
Here are the top Oregon State High School Student Journalists of 2026 (listed in alphabetical order):

Have students who would be great candidates for next year’s All State Journalism Team or for the Journalist of the Year contest? Let us know about them so we can add them to our contest watch list which is one of the main ways we reach out to students and help them put together portfolios and applications for next year’s contest.
